We recently read James Weldon Johnson's early 20th-Century novel about "passing," The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man. Music is crucial to this important work of fiction. At one point, the narrator decides to go into the rural Southern states to learn folk music. This amazing contemporary band, Carolina Chocolate Drops, is in many ways doing what the Ex-Colored Man set out to do, yet never did.
